Born in Brooklyn, New York, Crane studied at the Pratt Institute with Winold Weiss. He then went on to study and practice stage design with Richard Boleslawsky at the American Laboratory Theater and at various other summer stock theaters. He was a noted printmaker who produced numerous illustrations for books and magazines. He is best remembered for his series of lithographs of New England subjects.
