Alf Svendsen was born on March 24, 1930 in Brooklyn, the son of Alf and Anna Thordina (Fjeldberg) Svendsen. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude, Syracuse University, in 1955, followed by a Master of Fine Arts summa cum laude, University Notre Dame, in 1965. He was an assistant sculptor to Ivan Mestrovic, Notre Dame, Indiana, from 1955-1956, then a sculptor at the Hall of African Man American Museum Natural History, New York City, from 1966-1968. He was an art teacher at Mount Anthony High School, Bennington, Vermont, from 1969-1971, and then a professor at Delaware County Community College, in Media, Pennsylvania, from 1971-1989. He is listed as a notable artist and educator by Marquis Who's Who.
